Abstract

The use of plant-feeding predators for biological pest control has traditionally been neglected, mainly due to the risk of them feeding on crop plants and causing economically significant damage. Yet, these predators offer advantages for biological pest control. They are mostly generalist predators that have an impact on several crop pests. They may also be able to establish on crops early in the growing season, when pests colonize them, and can remain on the target crop when prey is scarce. Therefore, management programs must seek to minimize risks while maximizing benefits. In vegetable crops, most of the literature on zoophytophagous predators has focused on four species: Dicyphus tamaniniiDicyphus hesperusMacrolophus pygmaeus and Nesidiocoris tenuis (Heteroptera, Miridae). The capacity of these species to produce crop damage in tomatoes varies. This damage has been related to relative predator-to-prey abundance, with damage increasing at high predator abundances and low prey densities. In this review, we analyze the use of these species in biological control programs and the associated benefits and risks. The differences in the damage caused by the four predatory species examined could not be attributed to either stylet morphology or saliva composition. However, feeding on specific plant structures where they may find the resources required for their development is what probably determines feeding damage. Understanding when and why these predators increase their feeding on plants or on certain plant parts is of crucial importance for integrating them in biological control programs.

Graphical abstract

Plant-feeding predators offer many advantages for biological pest control. However, if feeding on crop plants causes damage, then management programs must seek to minimize risks while maximizing benefits.

Highlights

► IPM must minimize risks associated to mirid predators while maximizing benefits. ► Injury by predatory mirids on vegetables cannot be related to stylet or saliva types. ► Feeding on specific plant parts seems to determine damage by omnivorous predators.

Water: (Rain and Sprinkler) shows unexpected impact on Tuta absoluta eggs.

Water: (Rain and Sprinkler) shows unexpected impact on Tuta absoluta eggs.

Experiments showed that rain water /sprinkler systems can reduce Tuta absoluta eggs survival in the field by up to 36% compared to the effect of releasing Trichogramma.sp.

In a paper published recently studying the biotic factors affecting Tuta absoluta eggs survival in the field. The effect of spraying water regularly on Tomato plants was compared to the release of the egg paracitoid Trichogramma spp. (1) Pure water managed to achieve up to 36% reduction in the survival rate of Tuta absoluta eggs. While Trichogramma spp. managed reduce the count by only 12%. These findings may help to explain the unexpected low level of Tuta absoluta infestation in open fields in Southern Europe and North Africa in the first part of 2011. Record rainfall was witnessed in the most of the Mediterranean countries. It may also explain in part the reduction in Tuta absoluta infestation in Tomato fields in Jordan which were regularly sprayed with diluted solution of Fytoclean (2) ........................................................................................... Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Insecticide resistance is a likely cause of field control failures of Tuta absoluta, but the subject has been little studied. Therefore, resistance to ten insecticides was surveyed in seven representative field populations of this species. The likelihood of control failures was assessed, as well as weather influence and the spatial dependence of insecticide resistance.

RESULTS:

No resistance or only low resistance levels were observed for pyrethroids (bifenthrin and permethrin), abamectin, spinosad, Bacillus thuringiensis and the mixture deltamethrin + triazophos (<12.5-fold). In contrast, indoxacarb exhibited moderate levels of resistance (up to 27.5-fold), and chitin synthesis inhibitors exhibited moderate to high levels of resistance (up to 222.3-fold). Evidence of control failures was obtained for bifenthrin, permethrin, diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron, triflumuron and B. thuringiensis. Weather conditions favour resistance to some insecticides, and spatial dependence was observed only for bifenthrin and permethrin.

CONCLUSION:

Insecticide resistance in field populations of the tomato pinworm prevails for the insecticides nowadays most frequently used against them-the chitin synthesis inhibitors (diflubenzuron, triflumuron and teflubenzuron). Local selection favoured by weather conditions and dispersal seem important for pyrethroid resistance evolution among Brazilian populations of T. absoluta and should be considered in designing pest management programmes.

Studies on the development of a mating disruption system to control the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Povolny (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

Pest Manag Sci. 2011 May 18. doi: 10.1002/ps.2202. [Epub ahead of print] Studies on the development of a mating disruption system to control the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Povolny (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Vacas S, Alfaro C, Primo J, Navarro-Llopis V. Source Centro de Ecología Química Agrícola-Instituto Agroforestal del Mediterráneo, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Valencia, Spain. sanvagon@ceqa.upv.es. Abstract BACKGROUND: The tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta Povolny) has rapidly colonised the whole Mediterranean and South-Atlantic coasts of Spain, and it has become a key problem in both outdoor and greenhouse crops. New control methods compatible with biological control are required, and mating disruption appears to be a perfect method in current agriculture, as it is an environmentally friendly and residue-free technique. IPM packages tested have included the use of pheromones to detect populations, but there has not been much previous research on mating disruption of T. absoluta. In this work, pheromone doses varying from 10 to 40 g ha(-1) , emitted at a constant rate over 4 months, were tested in greenhouses with different levels of containment in order to evaluate the efficacy of mating disruption on T. absoluta. RESULTS: Trials on containment level revealed that the flight of T. absoluta was satisfactorily disrupted with an initial pheromone dose of 30 g ha(-1) , and levels of damage did not significantly differ from those in reference plots with insecticide treatments. Later efficacy trials confirmed previous experiences, and release studies showed that control of damage and flight disruption were taking place when releasing at least 85 mg pheromone per ha per day. CONCLUSION: Effective control using pheromone application against T. absoluta can be achieved, in greenhouses with high containment levels, for 4 months, with initial doses of 30 g ha(-1) . Further research must be conducted in order to evaluate the prospect of outdoor application of mating disruption systems. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry. Tomato pests update: Tuta absoluta

EPPO releases its latest information about tomato pests The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) has recently disclosed new information about pests in several tomato crops. Reports of Tuta absoluta in Greece, Lithuania, Iraq, Italy, the United Kingdon and the Mediterranean basin are described hereunder. First report of Tuta absoluta in Greece In Greece, the presence of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) was detected for the first time in June 2009 in Crete. The pest was then identified in 5 geographically distant regions of Crete (Chania, Heraklion), Peloponnese (Achaea, Trifilia) and Western Greece (Preveza), both in glasshouse and field tomato crops. The distribution of T. absoluta in Greece is localized and scattered, suggesting multiple and simultaneous introductions rather than natural spread resulting from a single introduction. The situation of Tuta absoluta in Greece can be described as follows: Present, first found in 2009 in Crete, Peloponnese and Western Greece. First report of Tuta absoluta in Lithuania Following the detection of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae – EPPO A2 List) in imported tomato fruits, surveys were conducted from July to September 2009 in Lithuania. Yellow sticky traps with synthetic sex pheromones were located in tomato glasshouses in different parts of the country. Several specimens (40 in total) of T. absoluta were caught at 3 sites: Pagiriai (Vilnius city, Vilnius county), Vidmantai (Kretinga district, Klaipeda county) and Naujosios Kietaviškes (Elektrenai municipality, Vilnius county). The situation of Tuta absoluta in Lithuania can be described as follows: Present, detected for the first time in 2009 in 3 sites, on glasshouse tomatoes only. First report of Tuta absoluta in Iraq In Iraq, tomato crops were surveyed for the presence of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae – EPPO A2 List) during autumn 2010. The pest was found near Rabia (Ninawa Governorate, northern part of the country neighbouring Syria). The situation of Tuta absoluta in Iraq can be described as follows: Present, first found in autumn 2010 in Ninawa Governorate. Tuta absoluta detected in Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italy The presence of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae – EPPO A2 List) has been detected in the Autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano (Trentino-Alto Adige region), Italy. During monitoring surveys, adult specimens were caught by pheromone traps in both indoor and outdoor tomato crops. The situation of Tuta absoluta in Italy can be described as follows: First found in spring 2008 in Southern Italy, now reported from Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Molise, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Trentino-Alto Adidge Umbria and Veneto; under official control. Tuta absoluta in the United Kingdom In the United Kingdom, 11 and 2 outbreaks of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae – EPPO A2 List) were found in tomato crops in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Eradication measures are continuing. The situation of Tuta absoluta in the United Kingdom can be described as follows: Small numbers of outbreaks were reported in 2009 and 2010, under eradication. Tuta absoluta continues to spread around the Mediterranean Basin According to the Information Network on Tuta absoluta (Internet forum) and personal communications, the pest continues to spread, in particular towards the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Basin. The presence of T. absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae – EPPO A2 List) has been detected in the following countries, but most of these records have not been confirmed officially by NPPOs or published in the scientific literature. Bahrain and Kuwait: the presence of T. absoluta is suspected in these two countries on the basis of symptoms observed on tomato crops. Egypt and Jordan: articles published in the Egyptian and Jordanian newspapers have indicated that T. absoluta is widespread in these countries and causing severe economic losses in tomato crops. Lebanon: according to discussions on the Internet forum, T. absoluta is causing problems in tomato crops. Libya: it was declared in July 2009 that T. absoluta was captured in pheromone traps in 2 locations. Saudi Arabia: sporadic infestations of T. absoluta have been detected in different parts of the country, in tomato crops in Tabuk (northwest of the country near Jordan), in tomato and potato crops in the northern region of Hail, and also in farms close to Medina (Al-Medina Al-Mounawara). Sudan: in June 2010, T. absoluta was observed in greenhouse tomatoes (summer production) showing severe foliar symptoms in Khartoum State. From February to April 2011, the pest was detected in tomatoes (both protected and outdoor crops), as well as in aubergine and potato crops using the pheromone traps. This the first record of T. absoluta in Sudan. Syria: specimens of T. absoluta have been caught in various locations. Leaf damage was observed on many farms in the regions of Banyas and Tartous. About EPPO: EPPO is an intergovernmental organization responsible for European co-operation in plant protection in the European and Mediterranean region. Founded in 1951, it has grown from 15 original members to today's 50 member countries, including nearly every country in the European and Mediterranean region. Under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), EPPO is the regional plant protection organization (RPPO) for Europe. EPPO – May 2011 source :
